Abriendo Caminos Educational Materials Package

Abriendo Caminos is an education series sponsored by University of Illinois Extension that aims to combat childhood obesity by engaging the whole family in making better decisions to promote a healthy lifestyle. The goal of this project was to create a clean, approachable look for the materials package that would appeal to multiple generations of family members, while also efficiently communicating the intended message across multiple languages. While the materials were only designed in English and Spanish, there was talk of eventual translations in more languages, so future-proofing was also a goal. These materials were also created using a framework in Adobe InDesign that allowed the client to have the option to digitally distribute the curriculum and was accessible to screenreaders. This project represents well over 500 design hours and was an immense undertaking as the sole designer assigned.

The Facilitator Manual was the central piece of the project and ended up being over 700 pages long. Because of the length, I implemented a color-coded system following the project color palette. Facilitators can tell what section of the manual they are in based on the color of the repeated triangle background element.

The main goal when designing the Facilitator Manual was clean, readable type that was easy for a facilitator to follow mid-presentation while not getting lost in unbroken walls of text. Clear separation of text sections was incredibly important in both languages.

In addition to the Facilitator Manual, a presentation template was designed and 30 slide decks were assembled in PowerPoint, totaling at over 300 individual slides in both English and Spanish.

Supplemental handouts in Spanish were designed and included in the back of the Facilitator Manual to be copied or printed individually by facilitators for classes.
